summerhayes park winmalee playground

Summerhayes Park Winmalee in the lower Blue Mountains has something for everyone. It is a recreational hive of activity for local families, particularly during football and netball season.

Recreation At Summerhayes Park Winmalee

Summerhayes Park is a major recreational and environmental reserve that mainly services the communities of Winmalee and Springwood. The local bushland is taken care of by Summerhayes Bushcare Group.

There is so much for families to enjoy at Summerhayes Park, including the popular fully fenced inclusive playground, which was recently renovated (in May 2020) as part of the NSW government’s ‘Everyone Can Play’ program.

You will also find netball and basketball courts, two full sized soccer fields, a clubhouse with toilet amenities, skatepark, bushland, four tennis courts, an outdoor exercise space, a fenced dog off leash park and so much space to ride bikes and scooters.

The Playground @ Summerhayes Park

The fully fenced inclusive playground is an attractive feature at Summerhayes Park. Its winding concrete pathways inside and outside of the fence are especially suitable for young children to bike ride and scooter.

The central feature of the playground is the large climbing frame. It is a great challenge for children as they scramble their way up the web of ropes.

The round nest swing is also popular, as is the (very) tall fireman’s pole and long wavy blue slide.

Summerhayes Park playground has a few sensory items placed throughout the playground, a hopscotch grid painted on the path and two metal bars to stretch, swing and play on. Children may also like to venture out in to the nearby bush area for free play and hiding and finding painted kindness rocks.

You should also be able to find a few good spots to sit and watch your children at the playground, including a shaded bench seat close to the netball courts.

Unfortunately, the toilets are usually locked, unless the ovals are being used for sport. This makes it very tricky when visiting the playground with young children.

Parking is usually not a problem as the carpark is large. During busy sporting events, however, you may need to find parking further afield.

Winmalee Skatepark

The skatepark at Summerhayes Park Winmalee can be found via a pathway that leads from the playground through the bushland, on the corner of Bunnel Avenue and Hawkesbury Road, Winmalee.

There are no round bowls at Winmalee Skatepark but there are plenty of other features designed for tricks and challenges, including a staircase, rails, ramps and blocks. Winmalee Skatepark also tends to be well shaded from the afternoon sun, which is great during the warmer months.

Winmalee dog off leash park is located next to the skatepark, on Bunnel Avenue.

Sport At Summerhayes Park

Summerhayes Park is a major sporting recreation space. It has a longstanding history with:

  • Springwood United Football Club;
  • Springwood Netball Club; and
  • Winmalee & Districts Tennis Club.

Summerhayes Park Winmalee is a wonderful, vibrant and central space for families to use for recreational activities, including football, bushwalking, exercise, dog walking, bike riding, bird watching and free play at the playground.
