Mermaid's Cave Walk Blackheath waterfall

Mermaids Cave Walk Blackheath is a short and spectacular Blue Mountains hidden gem. Just off Megalong Valley Road in Blackheath you will discover the most incredible sandstone caves that tower above you and a lovely waterfall that make the experience even more surreal.

The tranquillity and awesomeness of this walk makes it an essential stop if you are passing through Blackheath in the upper Blue Mountains.

How To Find Mermaids Cave

You will locate Mermaids Cave just five minutes drive from the Great Western Highway in Blackheath. It is located on the left about 2km down Megalong Valley Road on the left as you head down the winding road.

You will see the ‘Mermaids Cave Walk’ sign on the left and a small parking lot on the right (the carpark is a little tight if there are more than two cars there – it probably only fits around 3 or 4 cars maximum).

Check the road carefully as you cross over to the start of the walk. Cars descending down the road cannot see you crossing so walk briskly and hold your children close. There are a bunch of rocky steps to navigate at the beginning of the walk, as you make your way down to this impressive cave.

What To Expect On The Mermaids Cave Walk Blackheath

The Mermaids Cave Walk Blackheath is only around a 200 metre return walk. So if you are short on time and after something quintessentially Blue Mountains, then this quick walk is for you.

It might take you around 20 – 30 minutes to check this place out (depending on how much time you spend exploring the cave).

There are a lot of stairs on the Mermaids Cave walk. The stairs will lead you down to an area marked off by metal hand rails. There are no cliffs here but keep children close, as always, to ensure that they stay safely on the path.

Turn the corner and head down another 77 stairs. This fairly steep staircase is a masterpiece and looks spectacular as they are encapsulated by narrow, enclosing sandstone cliffs.

Pictures do not do this amazing sight justice – you will need to see it for yourself to get the true experience of this serene and magical place.

The staircase will lead you straight down to Mermaids Cave. Get ready to feel small because the undercut sandstone caves are truly amazing. You will be greeted by a tall waterfall and an enchanted garden oasis on the ground, which is fun to explore.

The volume of water on the waterfall is dependant on the amount of recent rain. As always, supervise children closely around water and keep them close to you. Read more about water safety here.

Explore the ground level and venture up another set of stairs toward the waterfall and get a bird’s eye view from there. Sit and soak up the tranquility of this very special place and let any stress melt away as you gaze around this natural ampitheatre.

Who would have thought that this incredible water hole is located on the side of the road in Blackheath? That’s the mysterious nature of the Blue Mountains. You get a lifetime supply of discovery and amazement!
