The Leura Cascades Round Walk is set in the lovely town of Leura in the upper Blue Mountains. It is a family friendly, short (about 1km) and scenic walk set in a watery wonderland. Allow between 30 minutes to one hour to enjoy this easy to moderate track.

** Cliff Drive remains closed between Solitary Restaurant and Jersey Avenue, Leura.

** While Cliff Drive is closed, you may like to begin this walk from the entrance behind Solitary Restaurant. There is a safe pathway (about 200 metres long) being constructed that you can use to get back to your car rather than walking along the winding road.

You will still need to cross the road at the end though and walk up a short, steep hill. This new pathway makes the walk a loop walk.

Katoomba Municipal Baths were a popular swimming spot back in the 1920s up until the 1970s. Locals used to have lots of fun swimming in the cold water with tadpoles and frogs! The land was filled in around 1975 and Leura Cascades picnic area is now in this space. Image credit: Flickr

Leura Cascades Picnic Area is the most popular place to start the Leura Cascades Round Walk. You will find free parking, three outdoor picnic tables, including one sheltered picnic area inside the cave near the carpark on Chelmsford Drive.

There is plenty of space for games or to lay out a picnic rug and enjoy the sounds of nearby cascades. Toilet facilities are also nearby.

Various Walking Options

You have a few options when you visit Leura Cascades. If you are walking with children, you may like to complete a ‘there and back’ walk, to Bridal Veil Lookout and back to where you began at the picnic area. This is a moderate walk that is approximately 1km return.

Alternatively, you may complete a loop walk from the picnic area and walk to the exit near Solitary Restaurant (or vice versa). See the two green markings on the map below. It is a moderate walk, with a lot of stairs and is around 1km.

Blue Mountains City Council is currently creating a pathway to make a safer link between these two points (there still seems to be only one small section where you will need to walk on the road, just behind Solitary Restaurant).

If you would like a longer walk, Leura Cascades is connected to the Prince Henry Cliff Walk and the Ampitheatre / Fern Bower Tracks.

The Prince Henry Walk is a stunning 7km track that follows the cliff line from Gordon Falls in Leura all the way to Katoomba Falls. So you may like to walk all the way to Echo Point or Katoomba Falls if you like (but then you will need to find your way back to your car or the nearest train station).

Lookouts

You will be awed by various lookouts in the vacinity of Leura Cascades. Most notable is Bridal Veil Lookout, which provides magical views of Bridal Veil Falls, which cascade down into the Jamison Valley.

Majestic Lookout is a small lookout that sits just above Leura Cascades, but the views (and cliff drops) are big!

Water

For most of your walk around along the Leura Cascades walking track you will hear the tranquil sound of water – from trickles to larges rushes. The amount of water will depend on recent rainfall.

The rocks are often very slippery so it is not recommended that you pass the barriers to splash in water.

The Beauty

Leura Cascades Round Walk is one of the most beautiful walks in the Blue Mountains. It is a well maintained track with a variety of different staircases. Handrails are provided for some of the walk and bridges are fenced (although needing some repair).

The walk has a rainforest feel to it, is cool in Summer and showcases beautiful ferns and foliage to admire.

Getting To Leura Cascades

If travelling by car, take the Great Western Highway towards Katoomba. Turn off the highway at the Leura exit and follow Leura Mall through town. Turn right on to Cliff Drive and continue until you reach Leura Cascades picnic area.

There is a moderately sized parking area at the picnic area, however, on weekends and holidays it fills up quickly. We recommend arriving early to get a close parking spot or you will need to find street parking nearby.

Public transport is an option for Leura Cascades. If taking the train, it is a 1.5km walk to the entrance of this walk from Leura Station. The walk should take you around half an hour. Take care walking on Cliff Drive as there are some blind corners.

The Leura Cascades track is part of the Blue Mountains National Park, so unfortunately you will need to leave your dog at home.
Plenty of stairs lead you down into the valley (if coming from the Solitary entrance).
The handrails are helpful for keeping children on the track.

Leura Cascades Round Walk is a very pretty walk that is suitable for families. It is an experience that will calm your senses, help you to connect with nature and destress. We hope that you enjoy soaking up the beauty of this special Blue Mountains walk.
