Wow! What a wonderful addition the new extension of Glenbrook Park and playground is for families in the Blue Mountains! Have you checked it out yet? It is well worth a visit and has so many great new features for children (and adults!) to enjoy!

In 2018, Glenbrook Park added a beautiful space for young children to play, discover, splash, climb, swing and slide. Thanks to the Western Parkland City Liveability Program it has added a brand new inclusive play space for seven to 12-year-olds. The old equipment has been replaced by modern, architecturally designed playground equipment that children will be inspired to explore.

With a brand new, well-designed playground for young children, as well as play equipment suitable for older children, Glenbrook Park in the lower Blue Mountains offers a great outing for children. With the addition of the barbecues and picnic areas, the whole community can enjoy this space.

Features Of The Glenbrook Park Upgrade

Fully Fenced

The large playground at Glenbrook Park is fully fenced. There are a few entry and exit points with child-safe latches. One latch near the junior playground is slightly broken at the moment though, so please ensure you close the gate well to avoid little escapees.

5.4-metre climbing rope tower with tunnel slide

This is the main feature of the new Glenbrook Park playground upgrade. You can even see it from the highway! The rope climbing frame is a complex web of ropes that lead to the top of the pyramid.

There are two choices when you arrive at the top of the climbing apparatus – slide (the best option!) or climb down. Apparently, the slide is really fast and fun! The slide is a unique addition to the climbing frame. It really provides excellent motivation to get kids climbing!

20-metre double flying fox with two seats, including one for smaller children or those needing support

The double flying fox is another fantastic feature of the new Glenbrook Park upgrade. They are smooth, fast and put a smile on the face of every rider.

The more supportive flying fox is great for very little children. However, it can be quite tricky putting children into the swing and buckling them up from the platform. It is definitely easier to place children into the seat from the lower part of the swing then push them up to start their ride.

If too many children are standing on the platform, there might be potential for falls. It is best for just one or two children to be in the yellow frame and others may need to line up on the ground behind it.

Five additional swings, including a multi-person nest swing for those who need back support

There often seemed to be quite a few children waiting for the swings in the junior playground, so a variety of five more swings is a bonus in this new upgrade! The orange, supportive swings are especially a hit as children enjoy sitting or standing on them.

Two in-ground trampolines

The new in-ground trampolines at Glenbrook Park are super bouncy! If you are an adult though, you are likely to touch the grate underneath as you bounce. One trampoline is large enough for a wheelchair.

There does not seem to be any other equipment that a child in a wheelchair might be able to use. There are other inclusive features, however, that provide back support if needed.

Monkey bars

The monkey bars are set to the side of the playground so they might be overlooked in favour of the more exciting equipment. Encourage your children to give them a go though, because monkey bars provide excellent strength training, relieve stress, increase self-confidence and a positive ‘can-do’ attitude and they improve overall fitness.

Timber balance trail

At Glenbrook Park, children can combine high energy equipment with the slower pace of the timber balance trail, which promotes balance, coordination and strengthens the core. The balance trail may also assist children to engage in imaginative play, such as crossing shark-infested waters, escaping crocodiles or dancing in a ballet class!

Sensory components

There are a few sensory and imaginative aspects to the new upgrade, including the decorative ‘gong’ (as described by children at the park!), footsteps in the pavement and a few lovely plants to touch and smell. Not much more sensory was obvious but we will be sure to take a closer look on our next visit.

Barbecues

Pack a picnic or enjoy a barbecue with family and friends at Glenbrook Park and playground! There are six free electric barbecues to use. Simply push the button for 20-minutes of sizzling goodness. Press again if you need more time.

Seating & sheltered picnic tables

There appears to be plenty of seating provided in the new upgrade of Glenbrook Park and playground. The designated circular seating closest to the Village side is a surprising and attractive feature to the upgrade. A wooden park bench and additional sandstone seating provide a rustic and social meeting place for small groups of all ages to gather.

Enjoy watching the children play from the large wooden picnic table, located near the swings. There is a step down to it, which seems to be a potential trip hazard. Hopefully, there are no injuries as a result of this step.

Outside of the fenced playground near the barbecues, you will find two sheltered seating areas. It seems that the shelters are the same that existed previously but the tables and seating are new.

Water fountain

Forgot to bring drink bottles for the family? It happens! The water fountain is located just outside the fenced playground, closest to the Visitor’s Centre. Fill up a drink bottle or sip from the fountain.

Water is right there when you need it most, and with all of the running around kids do, they’re going to need to stay hydrated! Even dogs have their own little bowl. Watch children closely though, because the water fountain is located outside the fenced area.

Scooter path

The path circling Glenbrook Park is the glue that makes the entire playground one cohesive space rather than two separate playgrounds. The Glenbrook Park and playground upgrade extends naturally into the existing junior playground. Scootering is yet another fun activity that children may enjoy when they visit Glenbrook Park.

Plants & garden

The upgrade includes many plants and trees that provide a natural feel to the playground. As the trees grow over time, they will produce even more shade.

Shadecloth

The large shade cover installed over the five swings is a welcome addition to Glenbrook Park, especially during the warmer months.

Amenities & parking

The toilet block is located just outside the fenced playground, near the main carpark. It is the original block and has an accessible toilet available.

There appears to be adequate parking available all around Glenbrook Park. There are plenty of parking spaces at Glenbrook Cinemas and next to the tennis courts, more parking just off the highway and along the streets, as well as another small lot near the oval.

The Junior Playground at Glenbrook Park

The junior playground at Glenbrook Park is a lovely space for children to play and develop their imaginations. It is most suitable for children up until around four or five years.

A variety of features in the Glenbrook Park junior playground

In the junior playground at Glenbrook Park, there is:

  • The scooter path that links up with the new extension,
  • A horse sculpture to climb on named ‘Henrietta’,
  • A water tank climbing apparatus with telephone,
  • A sensory trail,
  • A water play pump, glenbrook adventure playground water pump
  • The local men’s shed hand made a clatter bridge (which is currently being repaired),
  • Four different swings, including an accessible swing,
  • A little rope climbing frame,
  • Small slide.
  • Spinning feature
  • Music centre

Locomotive themed apparatus

This is exciting for any little train enthusiasts! Glenbrook Park’s junior playground features charming locomotive themed elements in the park, including railway tracks that are used as balance beams, a set of railway luggage scales that may be used as a small stage, railway sleepers and fettler’s cartwheels.

Grassed area

The grassed area within the gates near the junior playground is a lovely spot for mother’s groups or friends to meet for a picnic or coffee.

Glenbrook Park and playground is a beautiful spot for families and friends to gather. A lot of planning, community input and resources have gone into making this space as inclusive and family-friendly as possible.
