Children running along the path of Darwins Walk Wentworth Falls

Darwins Walk Wentworth Falls is an easy, ideal family walk in the Blue Mountains, suitable for all ages. It leads from Wilson Park on Falls Road, following Jamieson Creek, all the way to the top of Wentworth Falls.

You will encounter a variety of bridges, waterholes and boardwalks along the way and dogs on leashes are allowed on the route (as far as Stage One is concerned). Darwins Walk is a well maintained, scenic walk with various lookouts and smaller waterfalls to view along the way and we highly recommend it for families with children.

At this stage it is only the upper section from Wilson Park to Fletcher Street, that is open to walk, covering approximately two-thirds of Darwins Walk. This section of the Darwin Walk is the most family friendly, as the upper section (anticipated to be complete by April 2025) is more challenging.

This is the start of Darwins Walk. Blue Mountains City Council has spent four years restoring this walk after flood waters destroyed much of the walk.

If you’re travelling by car, there is a lot of free street parking available along Falls Road in Wentworth Falls, just after the exit from the Great Western Highway and there are toilet facilities here too. If arriving by train, access to Darwins Walk is an easy walk across the highway from Wentworth Falls train station.

Start Darwins Walk at the sandstone entrance at the back of Wilson Park. It is approximately 1.6km one way to the Fletcher Street exit.

The walk is well signposted. Follow the signs to Wentworth Falls Picnic Area.

Much of the walk is flat with bridges and boardwalks, so even though good hiking shoes are always recommended, regular running shoes are fine for the first part of Darwins Walk.

Children enjoy observing the waterfalls, flowers and interesting insects they find along the walk. Because Darwins Walk is mostly flat and not too strenuous, children are freed up to observe and explore the beauty of their surroundings.

There are many new bridges along Darwins Walk where you can view Jamison Creek.

When you arrive at the Fletcher Street exit, the remainder of Darwins Walk is closed. So you can either return the same way you walked or exit the track and return to Wilson Park via the road, which is about a 1.7km walk along Fletcher’s Street and Falls Road (see the map below).

Our family returned to Wilson Park via the back streets of Wentworth Falls. In hindsight, the return Darwins Walk may have been easier for the kids than walking up Fletcher Road, which is uphill. Despite the uphill journey back to the car, looking at all of the lovely homes and gardens around Wentworth Falls was enjoyable. The distance is about the same as the return route along Darwins Walk.

Alternatively, if the children are tired and you have two adults walking in your group, one person could fetch the car and meet the rest of you on Fletcher Street.

Essential Tips For Darwins Walk Wentworth Falls

  • Even though there are no cliff edges, always keep children close to you, with one adult leading the way. We saw one snake slither into the grass near the track on our walk (it was the end of March) and even though snakes will usually avoid you, it is best if an adult takes the lead and, if possible, another adult is the caboose at back of the group. Please also read our top 5 Safety Tips for bushwalking with children.
  • Bring plenty of water and snacks for your walk. Even though Darwins Walk is a fairly straightforward and short track, you will still get thirsty and hot, especially when climbing the stairs at the end of the track.
  • Unfortunately, this walk is not accessible for wheelchairs or prams. If you have a small baby in tow, a baby carrier should be sufficient for this walk.
  • Steps! There are many steps on the Darwin Walk Wentworth Falls. Take a few breaks for the kids, if needed.

You could easily make a day trip in Wentworth Falls, including Darwins Walk, a picnic and play at Wilson Park and a visit across the highway to Wentworth Falls Lake.
