Memorial Park Blackheath water play at The Rocketship park

Memorial Park Blackheath, also known as the ‘Red Rocket Ship Park’, is one of the most historic parks in the Blue Mountains and after its recent 2023 renovation, it’s one of the best playgrounds in the Blue Mountains!

This hidden gem of a playground in Blackheath is now equipped with all you need for a memorable stop if you are passing through the upper Blue Mountains, planning a picnic or birthday party, or enjoying an extended morning out with family, friends or a mother’s group.

With a brand new toilet block located near the playground, the addition of winding water play channels and gateways, an accessible pathway throughout the playground, new native landscaping and fresh paint on the iconic pipe-based play equipment, Blackheath’s Rocket Ship Park has been given a wonderful upgrade for local families and visitors alike (and this is only Stage 1 of the upgrade!).

Here’s What To Expect At Memorial Park Blackheath

One of the most brilliant things about Memorial Park Blackheath is the space and variety that this space offers. There are three main play areas all located away from each other, as well as a swimming pool next door and a pond to explore. Each season offers a new experience too, from snow play in Winter to chasing crunchy leaves in Autumn. Your trip to this park is bound to make wonderful memories with friends and family.

The Playground

Memorial Park Blackheath is one of the largest parks in the Blue Mountains. With plenty of space and three different play spaces, this park is a really special place for families to enjoy.  There is a range of play equipment, including:

The Rocket With Long Tubular Slide

As you drive up to the park, you can’t miss this incredible red rocketship! Inspired by the original Rocket play equipment that was installed in this park in 1962, the new red rocketship inspires hours of fun for children as they climb up the middle and slide down. Kids feel on top of the world up there and get the best 360 degree views of the whole park!

Water play

The water play feature at Memorial Park Blackheath is fantastic for kids! Accessing naturally occurring water from under the ground the water play addition provides hours of fun and learning for children.

Not only is water play fun on a warm day, but it also promotes a range of social and physical benefits for kids. In water play, children develop problem solving skills as they determine how to allow the water to flow from place to place; social skills as they negotiate the shared space; language development as they negotiate and cooperate together; and STEM challenges as kids open and close gates and compare volumes, observe motion, count the rocks in the basin and notice the flow change as we move them. Adding water play to the rocketship park is not just fun with water – our children are learning so much as they play together.

The replacement of this play equipment is in the works but for now, this older playground remains and is still good fun for younger children.

The Heritage Playground

This pipe-based metal play equipment was built by Blackheath engineer Dick West. The four colourful climbing apparatus are a big hit with the kids! The stage coach, aeroplane, old boot and yellow car spark cooperative and imaginative play as they climb all over them pretending to drive and take off to faraway lands on amazing adventures!

A new toilet block

The toilets are conveniently located next to the playground and are open between 7am to 7pm, seven days a week.

The Pond (home to ducks and turtles!)

Next to the playground and through the gate, your children will enjoy turtle spotting at the pond. After its renovation, there are also a bunch of new sheltered picnic tables near the pond to enjoy a meal together.

The Swimming Pool

Make a day of it in Summer and pop across to Blackheath Pool right next door to the playground! Originally built during the 1930s, Blackheath Pool is an unheated, seasonal, outdoor swimming centre. It opens on the first weekend in November and closes on the first weekend in March.

Plan a birthday party or picnic at Blackheath’s Rocket Ship water play park or stop by on your drive through the Blue Mountains. Memorial Park Blackheath boasts the most gorgeous deciduous trees in Autumn, stunning rhododendrons in Spring, a pool next door in Summer and, if you’re lucky, snowplay in Winter!
