A Bit of Background

Wentworth Falls Lake was created by the damming of Jamison Creek to supply water for steam trains that came across the Blue Mountains in 1867. Parts of the lake are surrounded by the rare Blue Mountains Swamp, which is listed as an Endangered Ecological Community and is home to threatened species, the Giant Dragonfly and the Blue Mountains Water Skink.

8 Of The Best Things To Do At Wentworth Falls Lake

This is the new inclusive adventure playground completed in 2021. It is NOT OPEN YET (information correct on August 8, 2021)

A family day out at Wentworth Falls Lake will not disappoint. Bring a picnic, food for a BBQ lunch, bikes and scooters and enjoy life by the lake.

Wentworth Falls Lake is home to native and introduced waterfowl, native fish, including Gudgeons, and water bugs such as freshwater crayfish, freshwater shrimp and dragonfly nymphs. It is also teeming with a beautiful variety of birdlife.

1. Wentworth Falls Lake Bird Spotting

Children should bring their binoculars to enjoy spotting a variety of unique birdlife on Wentworth Falls Lake and in the surrounding bushland. Waterbirds here are usually common species, such as the Pacific Black Duck, Eurasian Coot and Little Pied Cormorant. Please remember that feeding the ducks at parks in the Blue Mountains is not allowed.

Occasionally other species, including the Black Swan, Hardheads and Hoary-headed Grebes are seen. Also keep an eye out for Varied Sittella, Grey Currawong and the Southern Emu-Wren. In Summer you may be fortunate enough to spot a Tree Martin or White-winged Triller!

2. The Pirate Ship Playground at Wentworth Falls Lake

One of the favourite features of Wentworth Falls Lake is the Pirate Ship Playground. Enjoy watching your children create imaginative play on the pirate ship equipment, pretend they are sailing on the high seas looking for treasure.

Even though it is not a large playground, the pirate ship play equipment is highly engaging for children, overlooks the picturesque Wentworth Falls Lake and lends itself to so much imaginative play. Toilets are easily accessible and there is some seating available.

If you are after a quiet playground, this may not be the one for you, as it is often teeming with tourists and locals, and for good reason – it’s a fantastic spot for families! Keep in mind that there is unfenced water near this playground so please remember to keep an eye on your children at all times.

3. Bike Riding & Scootering

Wentworth Falls Lake also has one of the local’s favourite bike paths for children in the Blue Mountains. Bring bikes or scooters for children to enjoy circling around the bike path.

4. Wentworth Falls Lake Loop Walk

The Wentworth Falls Lake walk is a beautiful, easy 3.5km around the lake and takes around 1.5 to 2 hours to complete. Find a large variety of native flora along the way. Hone your child’s map reading skills with the Bushtracker’s Map for the Wentworth Falls Lake Loop walk.

While it is possible to walk around the lake, it requires walking along a section of Banksia Road, where there is no footpath. There is a new proposed loop walk that would be entirely within the reserve, which will improve safety on the walk.

You can start and finish at any point but here are some details if you start your walk at the western edge of the playground on Sinclair Crescent. Walk along the path towards the dam wall.

On the way, see if you and your family can spot some of the sixteen sculptures of native plants found around the lake. Walk across the dam wall and follow the track to Waratah Road. Once on Waratah Road, turn left along the track that takes you through the hanging swamp.

Take the lower branch of the track and wander through the forest to the small beach.

Notice the swamp on the side of the lake. Retrace your steps away from the beach and find the track on your left that takes you up to Pine Avenue. Find the short path behind houses that takes you to Banskia Road.

Enjoy the diversity of plants along the edge of the road and the views of the lake and surrounding swamp. When you get to the causeway, turn left along the track (this is the unformed part of Banskia Road). Find the second track on your left that will take you through Eucalypt Forest back to the playground.

There are some parts of the walk that are along or near a road, so please take care with children and stay as close to the path as possible.

Wentworth Falls Lake is a wonderful spot for kayaking and canoeing, but leave your watercraft with engines at home.

6. Fishing on Wentworth Falls Lake

Bait fishing is popular at Wentworth Falls Lake. Take your canoe or kayak out to find Brown Trout, Redfin Perch and small yabbies. Eating large quantities of fish from this dam is not recommended due to pesticide use and being close to housing. More details about fishing at Wentworth Falls Lake can be found here.
