Rich in colonial Australian history, a day trip out to Governor Phillip Park Windsor from the Blue Mountains makes a fun and educational time for the whole family. Governor Phillip Park has recently had its playground upgraded and is one of the most modern and welcomed additions to Windsor by local families.

Governor Phillip Park was aptly named after Governor Arthur Phillip, the first governor of the colony of NSW. This wonderful new playground was opened by Hawkesbury City Council in July 2018 and is delighting families in and around Windsor who visit this lovely playground.

What To Expect At Governor Phillip Park Windsor

At Governor Phillip Park Windsor there is plenty for families and friends to enjoy. This excellent fully fenced playground is the biggest highlight of the park and it includes many unique features, including:

Colonial European History Incorporated Into The Playground’s Design

A very special part of Governor Phillip Park’s playground upgrade was to weave in elements from Windor’s European settlement. These can be recognised in the design of the tunnel, the large sandstone bricks and stepping stones, exposed brickwork, barrels, chains and natural wooden beams that were used to construct the climbing frame.

A Wide Variety Of Playground Equipment

At Governor Phillip Park children will enjoy a slide, merry-go-round, small (but epic!) bird’s nest swing, a one of a kind fishnet tunnel and in-built trampolines.

Spot The Animals!

Send children on a mission to find all of the small metal creatures hidden discretely throughout Governor Phillip Park’s playground. They might spot a frog, crab, a bat, lobster tail and more!

More obviously, they will find the giant lizard and investigate the three interesting cicada sculptures emerging curiously out of the ground.

Sensory Elements

Including sensory elements is such an important part of modern playground design. At Governor Phillip Park’s playground, children enjoy experimenting with the giant chimes; drawing on the blackboards (BYO chalk); touch, smell and admire the native plantings and herbs including rosemary; dancing in the mirrors, and of course, playing in the water!

Water play!

Water play at Governor Phillip Park Windsor is available all year round. Just press a button to turn it on and you have the best way to cool off on a warm day!

It is recommended that you bring a change of clothes though because even if the weather is cool, children still love to toy with water play! (much to our dismay).

Picnic and BBQ Facilities

Gather the family, mother’s group or a friend and enjoy the space that allows perfectly to set up picnics. Two electric barbeques are available to use. It is a beautiful place to enjoy a meal, overlooking the Hawkesbury River.

Other Tips

Shade

There is some shade provided by trees at the playground at Governor Phillip Park Windsor. However, it can get hot nonetheless so full sun protection is recommended. As the plants continue to grow, more shade will be provided by them.

Jacaranda Trees

November is a pretty time of the year with the flowering Jacaranda trees at Governor Phillip Park.

Boat Ramp

At the end of the park, there is a large public boat ramp where you can launch boats, canoes and kayaks to enjoy water sports on the Hawkesbury River.

Parking

Governor Phillip Park provides ample parking facilities at the playground and also at the boat ramp, which has large parking facilities for both car and trailers.

Toilets

Hawkesbury Paddlewheeler

If you are making a day trip from the Blue Mountains, you may consider taking the family on a boat ride to remember on the Hawkesbury Paddle wheeler. It is a 2-minute drive or 20-minute walk to the Paddlewheeler. Bookings essential.

You may also like to visit Australia’s oldest surviving church, the Ebenezer Church (Devonshire Tea is served from 10:00am to 3.30pm), explore the Australiana Pioneer Village in Wilberforce (which is about 10 minutes from Windsor), drive past the Richmond Air Base and, if you love history, you may like to visit Rouse Hill Estate.

If you like history, you may also like to look out for the Pioneers Settlers Monument memorial located in the park at the end of George Street, located between the Upper Hawkesbury Power Boat Club clubhouse and the boat ramp car park.
