Lithgow Adventure Playground

Lithgow Adventure Playground at Endeavour Park, Lithgow, is a beautiful, inclusive playground that is designed to engage children socially, physically and cognitively. It is so much fun, has inbuilt design features to interest children as they play, tips its hat to Lithgow’s mining history and is set in the most majestic location overlooking the Blue Mountains.

A Bit of Background On Lithgow Adventure Playground

Lithgow Adventure Playground at endeavour Park was designed by award-winning playground designer Ric McConaghy and is one of the largest recreational developments for the children and families of Lithgow in recent years. Officially opened in March 2019, this playground is worth a visit!

All The Great Things To Expect At Lithgow Adventure Playground

lithgow adventure playground

Situated in South Bowenfels, off the Great Western Highway, the variety of structured and unstructured play areas will captivate children of all ages. Lithgow Adventure Park is designed with a mining theme in mind. Its range of fantastic features include:

Climbing Tower

A wonderful climbing tower in the style of a mining poppet head is Lithgow Adventure Playground’s centrepiece (a poppet head is a frame at the top of a mineshaft, supporting pulleys for the ropes used in hoisting).

Double Mouse Wheel

lithgow adventure playground mouse wheels

The double mouse wheels are two round wheels – one small, one large – that kids run on at any speed they like. They are good fun but can get pretty fast (and scary!). It is safest if only one or two are using a wheel at the same time because if a child is scared by the speed of the wheel it is difficult for them to jump off. Younger children may get hurt if they can’t keep up with the speed of the wheel. In saying that, it is a unique addition to the playground!

Dual Flying Fox

There is one accessible flying fox seat with a seat belt (make sure you hear the click) and a regular ‘hang on for your life’ style seat (which sometimes gets stuck halfway on the way back but you just have to tug it down harder and pull back into place). These are very popular!

Climbing walls

On the climbing tower centrepiece, kids get the choice of three different climbing walls to access the tower. They are all great exercise and suitable for toddlers too under close supervision.

Water Play Features

Lithgow Adventure Playground provides an easy to use pump and another water feature with a button to push that allows a decent amount of water out to trickle down the makeshift creeks. Water play adds an extra sensory element to the playground that even the littlest children can operate.

Climbing Rocks

Three structures for clambering on and over and climbing in. Kids enjoy sitting on top to check out the awesome view!

Sand Play

Two large sand pits on either side of the central stairs add yet another sensory element to this fantastic playground. The sand may need topping up at times but it’s a lovely addition for children.

A Fire Pit!

Yes, there seems to be an inbuilt firepit at Lithgow Adventure Park, with seating around it. At least it looked like a fire pit!

Five Different Swings

Children get the choice of between a secure accessible swing (which was actually one of our kids’ favourites as it was likened to a thrill ride in its design), baby/toddler swing, flat seat, soft leather seat and a super fun small netted swing that flies high! Take your pick. All of the swings are great fun and overlook the amazing view of the Blue Mountains!

Other Fun Features

Your children will delight in the small features that are included to spark the imagination. Send your children on a hunt for the giant spider with six shiny green eyes, the squiggly snake, the party of snails and more!

Sign Language Alphabet Cards

One of our family’s favourite features of Lithgow Adventure Playground were the sign language cards throughout the playground, with one card with a word on it representing each letter of the alphabet. Our family learned quite a few new words in sign language the day we visited this playground. We were very impressed by this feature and the sign language cards made it very clear that so much thought has gone into the playground’s purpose of inclusivity, its design and layout.

Toilet Block

A strange feature to comment on but it is a funky toilet block from the future so it deserves a mention. Not only does the toilet block look bright and arty but it is also quite pleasant to use too! Classical music playing in the background makes you feel like you may be in a posh hotel! Being a public toilet, there is no guarantee that it will always be super clean. When we visited on a weekend, it was clean enough and there was pump soap available too.

Merry Go Round

A central feature of this playground is the spinning merry go round. This is a popular feature that encourages some social interaction as children chat and help spin one another.

Sheltered barbecues

There are a few barbecues with and sheltered seating available. These encourage friends and families to get together at the playground and to make it a social event. A great spot for a birthday party!

Slide

There is a long tunnel slide with shade cloth over the top which prevents the slide from getting too hot.

Bike and Scooter Path

A nifty little scooter and bike path loops around the playground. There is also a bike rack at the entrance to the playground near the toilet block.

Other Exciting Features

Other fun features scattered throughout the park include three tiny and very cute mushroom seats, a large walkalong lizard, quaint little stone pathways to explore, a small metal climbing frame, a mining themed seat to watch the kids play or to take in the view and a few square wooden seats or ‘stages’ for kids to perform.

Carpark

lithgow adventure playground carpark

Endeavour Park has its own carpark, just off the Great Western Highway, so there is plenty of parking. If you are coming from the Blue Mountains you cannot turn right into the carpark so Google will take you around the back streets so that you can turn left into the carpark.

Beautiful Setting and Plenty of Space

lithgow adventure playground beautiful setting

There is an abundance of wide-open green space for ball and running games. The view is beautiful at this playground and provides a relaxed atmosphere

It is difficult to find anything to improve about Lithgow Adventure Park. There is no fence surrounding the park but it isn’t too close to busy roads and as always, supervise children at all times.

Currently, there isn’t a lot of shade so the playground could be hot in Summer. However, a lot of trees have been planted in the playground are still young and growing. In time, they will provide ample shade once fully grown.

Close to the Blue Mountains!

Lithgow Adventure Playground is easily accessible to residents living in and around the Blue Mountains. Take a day trip to Lithgow to explore the playground, have a meal at The Lithgow Workies Club (the Wizard’s Kids Lounge is available on Friday evenings and weekends), explore Lake Lyall and Lake Wallace, or even stop in at the Lolly Bug on your way to Lithgow.
