Walks, Talks & Workshops

During the week and school holidays, staff create fantastic workshops, walks and talks designed for people of all ages and abilities. Some of the plants change from season to season too, so it’s worth coming back throughout the year to experience seasonal changes.

There is a large parking lot available which is a short walk to the entrance and Visitor’s Centre. You may also like to plan your visit with a map.

The garden hosts guided walks and tours, including a tour of the sunflowers this Spring.

Enjoy picnics and a barbecue on the grounds.

What We Enjoyed Most At The The Blue Mountains Botanic Garden Mount Tomah

Blue Mountains Botanic Garden displays an equisite array of native and international plants and floral displays. With plenty to learn, explore, views to admire and trails to walk, you will feel invigorated and refreshed after relaxing in these beautiful gardens.

The Huge Diversity Of Plants

Blue Mountains Botanical Garden Mount Tomah, sits on a 252 hectare estate on the summit of a basalt capped peak, 1000 metres above sea level in the World Heritage listed Greater Blue Mountains.

It is home to world class cooler climate plants, grouped by continents for easy comparison. So you can enjoy seeing plants from all parts of the world, from Australia, Africa, North America, Europe and South East Asia. It is a wonderful experience to see and touch these unique trees and plants.

An absolutely spectacular Californian Redwood.

There is so much to love as you stroll around exploring the beauty and diversity of the gardens. The most memorable sights for us would have to be the sea of daffoldils (we visited in Winter so daffodils may not flower all year round – usually only in late Winter and Spring), the Californian Redwood and the ancient Wollemi Pines. They are all a must see!

Exploring the Jurassic Garden was also impressive. Download the Jurassic Garden app to journey back through time and discover Australian dinosaurs and megaflora.

Educational

Lamb’s Ear plant – a favourite for children to gently feel with its velvety soft leaves.

The Blue Mountains Botanic Garden Mount Tomah is an excellent place to take children of all ages. Younger children might enjoy learning about animal habitats, shelter building and about what plants need to grow.

Children will also enjoy exploring the different themed gardens and getting to know native Australian plants and how they might be used as bush tucker and medicine.

Older children might like to read the informational cards to learn more detail about the plants and tune into the ‘Branch Out’ podcast to gain deeper insight about certain species..

So Many Trails To Explore

Blue Mountains Botanic Garden Mount Tomah is a great place to visit for a walk. Even though the paths are mostly flat (it is an uphill walk as you head back to the carpark), you get a good dose of exercise as you wander the gardens.

Explore the Forest Walk, Plant Explorers Walk, and take a walk to the North American and Southern Hemisphere Woodlands. Wander up through the Eurasian Woodland to the Rock Garden, returning via the Residence Garden.

The Forest Trail

There are so many options that you may like to come back another day to try them all.

The Amazing Views

From the Visitors Centre, the view over the Blue Mountains are spectacular. Even though The Blue Mountains Botanic Garden is just over 100 km from Sydney, you will feel a million miles away. Let any stress melt away as you recline on one of the park benches soaking up the view.

Surprises Around Every Corner

When young children explore the Blue Mountains Botanic Garden with you, you will realise that there is so much fun to be had.

Get children into nature at the Blue Mountains Botanic Gardens to use their imaginations and develop their love of nature.

From finding little huts to sit in along the way, trees that make fantastic cubby houses and grassy hills to roll around on, children will find ways to be curious, inquire, be imaginative and create their own fun.

The kids nicknamed this impressive grass tree the ‘Grug Tree’. They enjoyed hiding under it and pretending to be the fictional storybook character.
Children find fun places to hide and play in the gardens.

Just make sure children stay within the boundaries so as not to trample any flowers or plants. There are also some ponds and sections with water, so keep them in sight at all times.

The Gardens Are Definitely Worth A Visit

We highly recommend a visit to the Blue Mountains Botanic Garden Mount Tomah for the whole family. It is mostly pram and wheelchair accessible as the paths are mostly smooth and wide.

There are some steep hills coming back up to the carpark, which might be difficult with a manual wheelchair. Most of the garden is accessible by wheelchair. If need be, a mobility scooter may be hired from reception (currently closed due to COVID restrictions). An accessible toilet is available in the main building at the entrance.
